Taichi Saotome is amazing. I think he is one of the best onegata performers I have ever seen.

that's like asking 'Why do the Middle Easterners insist on veiling their women" Why do men consistantly get more pay than a woman for tha same job; in any country.

Well said, I believe so too. A male is always a male, no matter how much one feels like a female, so it gives a certain feeling a female can never have. It's hard to explaing but that's how I feel. Anyway, this guy seems awesome.

There is no longer a condition of only men playing the roles, Taichi would be considered a great performer regardless of his sex.

hmmm i dun think shakiin000 and kementari answered your qn! so the second opinion here is that onna-gata forms a unique part of tradition...attractions for tourists too! plus this should be accompanied by the mentality that being an onna-gata is ok, that it doesn't come with the negative impression of typical cross-dressing.
Kementari8 2008-04-07
traditionally it was performed by women but during those times it proved that temptation was too much for the audience and it was dangerous for the women to perform so it was changed to men therefore the custom stuck as men performing instead of women.

Thank you for sharing! It was great watching him "backstage"! ^^
Furzkopf888 2008-03-08
Wow.... He is incredible! As good as Tamasaburo (maybe better)^^
shakiin000 2008-03-06
Oh haven't you seen Geisha dancing?
His family does traditional performance, that's all. Don't get caught up with your image, do your research.

I think the beauty of Oyama(a male actor who plays female roles) is a different kind from the beauty of woman.

Can somebody answer my question:
I believe in Japan, there are many talented women capable of portraying a role like this or performing traditional dance.Yet, why is it that Japanese still insists that guys must play the roles of women during the play/dance?
xxliew 2008-02-16
yes, but that's not a sword I think.... it looks more like a staff... XD
xxliew 2008-02-16
So beautiful~~ I love that red costume he was dancing in! And that hair! So pretty!!! His dancing is sooooo good! And the martial arts dance was mind-blowingly AWESOME!!!!! He is so talented!!!!! So good.... But he looks a bit tired..... I suppose it must be really busy having to do so many performances.... and he's only fifteen here!! I salute you, Saotome-sama!!!

WOW!!!! I'm very impressed! He's wonderful! Hard work and talent = high artistry. Arigatoo gozaimasu. Gambate kudasai.

seukitchoge 2008-01-03
Very well said!

Wow, his dance is amazing. I wonder how he will look like when he becomes an adult. I think it'll be hard to dress like a woman then. But is he dancing the sword dance as well? Is so, that's incredible as well.

Likewise, Beethoven's music would never have come into existence, b/c the classical form, like Mozart's, would have remained the only acceptable type of music. & these examples are only based on the idea that music/dance were even "allowed" to progress from chant & tribal movements. Please give something an open-minded chance before you discount it completely.
(& I *love* Kabuki too!) (*^_^*)
UreMezzo 2007-12-16
No, it's not Kabuki, but it's a dance that has evolved from Kabuki. & just to give my opinion, it annoys me when people won't even give a new art the time of day, & immediately judge it on it's modernity, instead of its creative content. If everything stayed traditional & nothing every evolved, we wouldn't even have Kabuki - it would still be Noh theater.
cherrie439 2007-12-15
his parents are kabuki actors, he was born into it (like loads other kabuki actors) and these particular actors start from a early age, like 3 or 4. There's a need of younger actors within the show at times.
JPandCo 2007-11-07
just let me give my opinion... as long this is not kabuki, personally i don't like it, costumes and music well.. i'm sorry it breaks the tradition and i don't know if he is 16 or 14, but kabuki actors are not that age. Looks more like a cabaret show P:
